Analog Photography

While a little different from other projects, I thought it important to include these photos in my portfolio. This was the first “project” I’ve done not at the prompt of a professor or without another peer to collaborate with. These photos were taken during a month-long solo trip to Iceland and developed in a DIY darkroom in a closet at my house back home in Kentucky.
I had three main goals in mind for these photos. One, to document the things I saw in Iceland during my first trip outside of the US. Second, to create a contradiction: Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world but the photos I took are intentionally in black and white, they give off a lonely and slightly ominous mood. The country itself is a contradiction; no military, homeless, and generally happy people but the climate is harsh, mysterious, and the people live in a 24 hour darkness 3 months of the year. Last, to learn. I learnt a lot about myself exploring the country alone for a month but practically, I wanted to learn to develop my own photos. Once I got back to Kentucky I first had to bulid my DIY darkroom and become familiar with the chemicals, then I was constantly experimenting with times and tempertaures and scanning methods to make the best of my fragile film strips.
